Maximizing Small Spaces: Design Strategies for Compact Living

When musician Scout Willis encountered a quaint 1920s French Normandy-style home in Los Angeles, initially described as petite, she quickly recognized its potential. Despite its modest 1,000-square-foot size, comparable to a compact two-bedroom apartment in New York City, Willis felt an immediate connection. To unlock the full potential of this charming dwelling, she enlisted the expertise of Roman Alonso from the distinguished AD100 firm Commune, known for his ability to masterfully utilize every available inch. Alonso's philosophy revolves around careful curation: investing in fewer, high-quality items to maximize impact.

Ingenious design choices were implemented throughout the home to enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal. In the absence of a dedicated indoor dining area, a bespoke cocktail table was designed by Commune and fabricator Miguel Rojas, ingeniously serving a dual purpose for both drinks and meals. Storage solutions were paramount, with built-in units strategically placed in often-overlooked corners of the living room. These triangular wooden units, adorned with Judson glass, not only offer practical storage but also complement the home’s vintage character. Even Willis's dog, Grandma, received a custom side table that ingeniously doubles as a comfortable crate, complete with mesh doors and a cozy interior.

The creative use of space extends to every part of the residence, including the bathroom, where walls were strategically modified to incorporate recessed storage and custom furniture, reflecting a truly collaborative design process. Embracing the outdoors, Willis transformed her garden into an extension of her living space, featuring a brick-clad sunken lounge, daybed, and dining area. This outdoor oasis, designed with Geoponika, creates a surreal, open-air environment perfect for social gatherings, emphasizing connection and flow. The galley kitchen also showcases smart design, with custom shelving and hanging racks to display cookware, reducing the need for extensive cabinetry and adding a vibrant visual element.

Through thoughtful design, every square inch of a small home can be transformed into a functional and inspiring living area. By embracing multi-functional pieces, built-in storage, and integrating outdoor spaces, it’s possible to create an environment that feels expansive and inviting, proving that true luxury lies not in size, but in clever and purposeful design.
